SPOILERS AHEAD Hey y'all, so recently, I saw a local production of Legally Blonde the Musical, and I have some thoughts, mostly good but some critiques. Overall, I would rate the musical an 8/10, which, like my other reviews, is very good. Keep in mind this production was put on by high schoolers who are part of the Next Stop Broadway program, if you are unfamiliar, this is a program that people pay to be in. They put on lots of different shows with different kids of all ages. Just yesterday (4/18/24), High School Musical was performed by elementary kids. My sister had gone to support her friend, but I did not. Anyway, this post is not about High School Musical but about Legally Blonde the Musical. To start, I feel the character development in this show is way better than in the movie, specifically Vivian. In the movie, there wasn't a specific team-up, but it's implied in the epilogue; in the musical, Vivian has a whole song about realizing she's wrong and that Elle is a good person. This song includes lyrics like "Maybe Warner saw a girl who was sleeping her way to the top, but all I see is a girl who doesn't have to" and "You proved it to me, now show everyone what you can do. And you look great in dark blue!" This song shows her taking the blame and saying she was wrong about Elle, which I really love about her in the production. Another thing I really loved loved loved about Vivian is her voice. Depending on the show you see, it will differ, but on a music streaming service, under the song 'Legally Blonde (Remix)' Her voice gives me literal chills, those notes are so high and she does it almost effortlessly, and I'm not ashamed to say I'm jealous, watch out world once I learn to sing like that I will be unstoppable. No, but for real, anyone who plays Vivian has to be so talented and have such range, and I admire them all. Okay, moving forward, Emmet, Emmet, Emmet. This shows Emmet was somebody who I know goes to my school. I had seen him in Mean Girls and Shrek: The Musical. Let me yell, y'all, this kid is so talented and is definitely going places. like you know how people say, "Oh, Walker Scobell is the future of Hollywood." Well, guys, this man is the future of Broadway; the dedication he has to his craft is so commendable, and I would love to have half the dedication he has to something. Okay, going on from the cast, the actual plot itself is, of course, the movie plot, and it is remarkably similar to the actual movies. To this show, though, the costumes were mid, honestly. The clothes the actors were wearing had their moments; Emmet looked good the whole time, had a nice suit after he got all changed and whatnot, and before that, he looked like he should; his outfit matched his story, which is honestly so important. Although the guy's costumes were accurate, the girls were very um... questionable. The ensemble outfits were good because they were simple; they were supposed to be simple, but Elle's dresses were too simple and boring-looking. They looked like that challenge from 2016 where people would make dresses out of garbage bags, and her wig was horrible. I don't wanna be mean, but I don't think words can describe how bad that wig was. It was just so fake-looking, and it looked like it was about to fall off; it was almost laughable. okay, I'm done hating on costumes, but it could have made the show 10 better and more professional looking. Now comparing it to the movie, I honestly liked the show better maybe because its different and actually happening right in front of you but I just really thought the storyline played out better in the show than it did the movie. Regardless both were works of art that will continue to go down in history. but for now I have another gift! y'all know the album review I did for Mamma Mia right? Well hooray! Another album review of Legally Blonde: The Musical, I hope y'all enjoyed, see you next time.
