SPOILERS AHEAD Hey y'all, so based on the title, you can take a good guess at what this first blog post is about. That's right! This is my first blog post. No, that's not what you were thinking about; obviously, you clicked here for Mamma Mia, so I will write about that. I recently watched this movie because the songs had me in a chokehold, and I saw a TikTok showing a high school production. Naturally, I watched it. My sister (10) had said this movie sucked butt, I disagree. This movie starring Amanda Seyfried has such a good vibe; sure, the plot is a little empty and could use some work, but overall, I would rate it an 8.5/10. I think the casting on this is spectacular. Obviously, Meryl Streep is a fantastic actress, but one thing I truly admire about her and Amanda is their ability to change characters. One of my favorite examples is Amanda Seyfried's 'Mean Girls' She played Karen in this film, and I knew I had recognized her as I was watching; once I figured this out, it was shocking to know she could play a character that's a dumb girl and only thinks she's good for her body and then watch her play someone who has genuinely fallen in love and is smart enough to send a letter to 3 potential dads. I find that talent so impressive and admirable. Staying on this note, Meryl Streep is in 'The Devil Wear Prada' as this mean boss who needs everything to be perfect all the time, and I think the similarities between the 2 characters stop at the face. Getting into the character of Donna, I see her as someone who may have a lot of regrets yet keeps it together for the sake of her daughter. It shows this message throughout the film and in song lyrics such as "Why, why did I ever let you go? Mamma Mia, now I really know My, my, I could never let you go" from the infamous song 'Mamma Mia' I think this shows that Donna thinks she could have done better, but of course loves her daughter even though. Moving on to other characters, one that I particularly disliked at first glance was Tanya, who is one of Donna's friends; her character is built off past marriages and her implied love for money. Still, Tanya is not my favorite, and I think her character is shallow, yet I do respect her, particularly for her song 'Does Your Mother Know?' This song does show that she has standards and knows 1. what she is worth and 2. what others are worth. She wouldn't do something she knew could ruin someone else. Rosie, to me, though, was almost the opposite, I immediately liked her character, but then as the film went on, I felt a disconnect as if she was losing her original values; an example is her 'lone wolf' thinking, but then she ended up liking a guy. I don't think that was the right move on the writer's part. Now that I've told you all my opinions on characters as individuals, I am gonna talk about some character relationships. Skye and Sophie were immediately two of my favorite TV couples because of their dynamic. They clearly respect and love each other with everything in them but can still spend time apart; they don't have attachment issues to each other and make jokes about their relationship. This is so healthy because it really shows how much respect you can have for a spouse. Although their relationship was not the main point of the film, it was still one of the major parts, and I think that because it was so mutual between the two of them, the movie was able to focus on Sophie finding her dad. Now, as much as I would love to continue writing and go into detail that makes zero sense to even me, I am running out of room, so I'm gonna sign off, but below is everywhere you can watch the movie, and if you hadn't seen it and then read all this, well I'm sorry 🤷♀️you were warned. But before I go so soon I have included a total album review with a quick 5-star scale ranking of all the songs off the Mamma Mia! Album. Surprise! but seriously after that this blog post is over.
